The whole point of my asking what it be like if she were poor and black was not a racial issue. I try everyday to not hate anyone but when people play the race card for every stupid situation it's hard not to be. I was in Aruba when it happened and they cared because it was a missing human, color was no issue. For anyone, white or black, that throws the race thing around, why not take a look at you and your peers and see why people might judge you a certain way. Interesting. That reminds me of an incident during my senior year of high school back in 1986. A friend of mine (white attractive cheerleader) was shot to death by a fellow classmate who had an obsession with her. While the racism and name calling is really entertaining, I think the point is that the media is disproportionately more likely to cover these disappearances en masse when there is a young white woman/girl involved. Laci Peterson, Chandra Levy, Natalie Holloway, Elizabeth Smart - those names are just off the top of my head, and I remembered them because of the pervasive media coverage. I can't think of a single woman of color, or middle age, or of a lower socio-economic class whose disappearance was widely covered.

I think there's a very good reason for this, and it isn't about race. It's about ratings. It's a better story when someone middle or upper-middle class goes missing because if even the middle class can't feel safe, what hope is there for the lower class? It's more provocative, and therefore better for ratings. A young black woman goes missing, it's tragic and everyone's hearts go out to her, but unless she is attractive and upper middle class, it isn't entertainment.

Chas, I have been looking at that myself recently. Most of the reports (up until the last few months, have followed the rule that I posted about (the topic of conversation). That seems to be changing however. The most recent Amber Alert that I posted anything about was of two missing children whose parents are from Mexico. It would be nice to see the reports head in that direction (coverage of ALL of them).

All of the talking heads on the tv news shows keep saying how beautiful and intelligent that Natalie is and they keep emphasizing that she is an "A" student. Her mother on one show referred to her daughter as "My beautiful, intelligent and smart daughter". Anyone with an open mind can see, that if this were a short, fat dumpy girl of any ethnicity who was just a "c" student, and not as intelligent as Natalie supposedly is, she would not be getting all of this coverage. I also think that the family is financially well off and politically connected which also accounts for all of the media atention.

It is so sad that there are such narrow minded people in this world. I agree that if Miss Holloway were black and poor, that the media probably would not give it the coverage that it is getting now. I believe this because here in Birmingham (where Miss Holloway is from), there are two other individuals that disappeared right around the time that Miss Holloway did. One is a black female that works at a local hospital. She was kidnapped on her way to work and has never been seen or heard from since the beginning of May. The second individual is a black male that is a middle school principal. He has been missing since the end of May or the beginnning of June. The news media has not interrupted any regularly scheduled programming to update viewers of developements in either case (I know for a fact that there have been significant leads in the case). However, the fact that Miss Holloway is an American missing under questionable circumstances is the issue that all should be focusing on instead of what color and social status she holds.
