Soldier's Belongings Auctioned...

...while he is deployed. Apparently Army Reserve Specialist Patrick Rogalin put all of his stuff in a Public Storage unit before he deployed. While he was gone there were some issues with someone writing bad checks so he had to change accounts, and set up a new ACH for the storage facility. Remember, he is deployed overseas, so this stuff is going to take awhile.

In the meantime, his payment was probably late, so they auctioned his stuff off. Normally, at least from what I understand from a friend that owns a couple of storage businesses, they will pull the doors about halfway up, and without getting a real good look, auction everything in the unit off to the highest bidder. From what my friend says though, this is normally after several months of non-payment, and after they have used up all means of contacting the parties. Obviously Public Storage does things a bit differently. Since they are such a big company, I suppose that they can treat their customers like shit.

I know I damn sure won't be using Public Storage anytime soon. Apparently the insurance clause that Rogalin signed limits the company to $5000 in damages, which he says would be fine but they only initially offered $2000 for his $8000 in lost belongings then turned around and offered $2500 and told him he had seven days to accept. Or get nothing. That is bullshit. If they had any sense of decency they would come out of pocket for the full $8k and write it off as a casualty loss.

Public Storage is a member of the S&P 500, and it's Chairman of the Board B. Wayne Hughes probably makes well over a million a year. Actually, according to Wikipedia he's a freaking billionaire. The dude could wipe his ass with the $8k and never miss it (He is listed as 61st on the Forbes 400 this year with a net worth of $4.1 billion)

If you want to voice your complaint on this issue, their customer service center can be reached at 1-800-567-0759 Monday thru Friday 6am to 5:30pm PST and Saturday 6-5 PST.

There may be a lot of disagreement on how far we still have to go with racism, in this country. But there should be no dispute about how far we’ve come. Jim Crow laws were still in effect in my lifetime. Today, that kind of open, institutional... Read More
