Yesterday was a trip.
I was shorthanded and cooking by myself, so I knew it would end up being pretty busy. The guy that I pulled off of the graveyard shift to work with me until they (most likely) fire him over the alleged sexual harassment decided to text message me at one AM and quit. It's for the best anyway.
About Nine AM I started getting pretty busy. A bunch of the local high school kids started coming in and I heard that (in increasingly stupid versions) there was a bomb scare, someone had brought a gun to school, someone had been shot and they were calling parents to come pick up their kids. Actually what had happened is that someone had posted a vague threat on their Myspace account, someone got wind of it, and they were searching the school. That's it. The some of the regulars started coming in. One proclaimed he had been on the phone with police all night about the myspace thing, another claimed that the principal had personally called him and told him to pick up his kid, one claimed they had found a gun. 99% bullshit.
Then some of the kids claimed that VRHS (next town over and the school where my wife works) was shut down and either a bomb had been found or someone had been shot. So my waitress that has a kid in THAT school starts to wig out because she wouldn't know the truth from a fucking hole in her head and has to get in touch with her daughter. I knew she was going to walk out at any second. So I call my wife. Who says "huh?" basically. She checked with the principals and calls me back. Everything is fine, nothing going on in the county as far as the officials at the school knew. Damn, someone should have told them.
This calmed her down for about an hour until her daughter calls her back (also freaking out) and says that her teacher had told them she just watched a news report that said someone at our high school had been shot and the gunman was on the way to the other school. Yeah, I see that being on the news. So she leaves to pick up her daughter. Because that's what you do when gunmen are on the road and police are chasing him. Get in your car and drive in the same direction. Stupid.
All in all, NOTHING happened at either school. There may have been a scare at the other one, I am still waiting to see something on the news, but last I heard from City Hall was that it was just rumors. All of my wonderful rumor mongering customers that have to feel important about themselves spreading bullshit and getting everyone's panties in a wad. 60-70% of the students between both schools were checked out by their equally stupid fucking parents. If there really had been something happening the schools would have been on lock-down and parents would not have been able to get on the property. That's standard operating procedure. If I were the administration i would give them all 0's for the day and unexcused absences. My wife ranted about it a little bit last night as well, you can see her take on it here.
