Al-qaida Back to Full Strength
Over at Yahoo! News this story is on the front page right now.
A new threat assessment from U.S. counter-terrorism analysts says that al-Qaida has used its safe haven along the Afghan-Pakistan border to restore its operating capabilities to a level unseen since the months before Sept. 11, 2001.
So why the heck are we just now hearing about it? It's obvious to me at least as well as to many other people why they are back to those levels, if that is the case at all. We knew they were in Afghanistan when we pulled out the majority of our strength and put them in Iraq. What did our government expect?
The findings suggests that the network that launched the most devastating terror attack on U.S. soil has been able to regroup despite nearly six years of bombings, war and other tactics aimed at dismantling it.
The threat assessment focuses on the terror group's safe haven in Pakistan and makes a range of observations about the threat posed to the United States and its allies, officials said.
Counterterrorism officials have been increasingly concerned about al-Qaida's recent operations. This week, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he had a "gut feeling" that the United States faced a heightened risk of attack this summer.
Well damn, Michael Chertoff has a "gut feeling" Sure it ain't the Burritos dude? I didn't sleep worth a darn and I am having a gut feeling right as I type this up. It's gonna be nasty too.
I was reading a story about the increased possibility of terror activity over at Texas Fred's place last night before I hit the sack but needed to go to bed and just didn't feel like ranting at the time. I tend to agree with him that quite a bit of the reports coming out now are designed to keep us busy worrying about external threats rather than the greater internal threat we are facing from the Federal Government right now. Wagging the friggin' dog is what it is. And just in time for Iran to join in the game as well. W00t!
According to Yahoo,
"Today's unanimous vote sends a strong, clear message from the entire Senate to the Iranians that we know what they are doing in Iraq, and they must stop," said Senator Joseph Lieberman, who framed the legislation.
"This is a warning to the Iranians that whatever differences divide us politically here in Washington, we stand united against these outrageous attacks."
Thanks, Joe (Lieberman). We need you guys to stand united so that we can bomb the hell out of them just in time for the nominations next year. Not that I don't think that Iran is complicit in backing the insurgents coming into Iraq, but we don't need you to censure Iran for it. It's clear that we can't hold the Iraqi border any more than we can secure our own.
Perhaps these guys need to listen to Ron Paul a bit more and learn how to govern and secure our so-called "homeland".
