One of the things I have learned over the years from having three children is that although I love my children very much and enjoy spending time with them and letting them have a good time, sometimes I have to be the parent. I deal with several hundred people daily in my job and I see a lot of parents that are nothing more than their children's buddies. Their kids get away with just about anything they want and never learn any lessons. One of the problems with that is that they probably don't learn any of the lessons that they will need as adults, such as finances and how to deal with money.
It's OK to break the rules and hang for a day as Dave points out in his blog full of great parenting tips but you have to know where to draw the line and say no. It doesn't even have to sound mean. There are plenty of ways to be nice and say no at the same time. I learned that more from dealing with my employees than my children, but I am able to use that lesson on my children even so.
Anyway, I spent a little time reading his blog, Earn Smart - Spend Smart and their really are some great tips. I went ahead and added it to my RSS reader list. Although I hate RSS readers for the most part they are useful for me in that if I find a blog I am interested in I will add it to my list for awhile and if I decide it's worth it I will then add it to my blogroll.
