Honoring a Hero

Michael Murphy is the first posthumous Medal of Honor recipient from Afghanistan to be awarded for combat in that region. It was presented to his family today. Michael Murphy was a S.E.A.L. who gave his life in combat on June 28th 2005. President George W. Bush presented the medal to his parents, Dan and Maureen Murphy for their son's heroism.

I read an article over at Blackfive last year about Michael. Actually a couple, but this one had to do with the fact that the town where Michael grew up, Brookhaven-Patchogue, New York, and where he was also buried in 2005 named a beach after him. I would be honored to visit Michael Murphy Beach and as Froggy over a Blackfive mentioned, at least one community has put their money where their mouth is.

In June 2005, Murphy, 29, led his four-man Navy SEAL team into the 10,000-foot peaks of Afghanistan's Hindu Kush to search for a terrorist thought to be in the region. But they were soon spotted and started taking fire from more than 40 insurgents. According to a Navy report on the incident, the insurgents held the advantage of terrain and launched a well organized, three-sided attack on the team, forcing them deeper into a ravine.

The Medal of Honor is bestowed on a member of the United States armed forces who distinguishes himself "...conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States."

According to what I have read, two Medals of Honor have been awarded to recipients from the war in Iraq and this will be the first from Afghanistan.
