Illegal Immigrants Packing It In...

It was nice to run across this report over at CNN from the AP this evening.

Apparently illegal immigrants all over Arizona are getting frustrated with the economy and some really tough new legislation and are starting to pack it in and move to other states as well as back to Mexico and Central America. Good riddance...

I have no problem with immigration in this country. It's one of the things that help make this country great. The old melting pot thing. It's true. Some of our brightest and best minds are immigrants. That doesn't mean however, that it's OK for them to break the law and be here illegally. In general they don't pay taxes, but they use services which increase MY tax burden.

Part of the new legislation in Arizona is a new employer sanctions law. Businesses that are found to have knowingly hired illegal workers will be subject to sanctions from probation to a 10-day suspension of their business license. Repeat offenders would lose their license permanently. A lot of businesses are starting to fire people that can't prove they are here legally and once the money is gone the criminals are leaving the area. I am sure that quite a few are just moving to friendlier states but there are some that are fleeing the country as well.

Wake Up America seems to pretty much agree with me on the subject...

Time and again I have said immigrants are welcome in this country, when they come legally, and for those that break the first law of entering our country, we need to enforce the laws we have on the books and make them leave and come back through the front door, so to speak.

Apparently there are illegal immigrants that are starting to find our country inhospitable. Perhaps they should try coming here legally. They will find that we are plenty hospitable once they are here legally.

What's cool is that this just shows that immigration reform done the right way and law enforcement does work when we actually do it. It also gives lie to all of the immigration reform pundits who say that we can't afford to deport all of the illegals that are here. We won't have to. If they can't pay their bills the majority of them will leave under their own volition for greener pastures south of here...

Perhaps the illegal immigrants are beginning to understand what the American citizens realized when their jobs were lost or the labor rate fell so low they could not support their family. US corporations are driven by Greed because "it works" and the concept of Goodwill relative to communities or the people who comprise the community is no longer a concern if the profit margin can be increased by 0.01% by hiring illegals or shipping work outside the country the only question is where do they sign up.

That's only true for a very small percentage of corporations. Most of them are quite active in the community and since the federal government and social security administration have been requiring proof of citizenship for at least the last 21 years (I don't know exactly how long without looking it up since I've only worked for the same company for 21 years) most corporations don't work illegals.

The labor rate has continually gone up rather than falling and while it has not kept up with the cost of living, people can and do support their families. I am in the restaurant industry and although I have about 100 employees working in my three stores, there is nobody that makes minimum wage except for during training. Before you go spouting off about how I wouldn't know since I am management, the fact is that I did start at the bottom of the totem pole, making 3.35 an hour 21 years ago when I started, waiting tables, cooking and generally busting my ass to better myself. If people weren't so fucking worried about getting a hand out and were more willing to better themselves through their companies or going back to school then we wouldn't have to worry about so many of them not being able to support themselves.

That doesn't surprise me... It seems like the easiest solution to the problem is to treat it as an illegal employer problem, rather than trying to track down the indviduals. It's interesting how the issue managed to bubble up when nobody made a peep about it in 2002 or 2004.

Actually folks in Arizona and Texas have been making a huge deal about it for several years and the new rules for employers were overwhelmingly approved by a majority of Arizona voters.

Part of the problem IS the employers. Not most of it but if we dry up their sources of income they tend to leave. Funny how that works, ain't it.
