Shadowscope: Caylee Anthony Archives

High profile attorney Mark NeJame has resigned from representing George and Cindy Anthony and released a statement to the Orlando Sentinel which you can read in full down below in the extended entry as well as at the Orlando Sentinel. This comes on the heels of the firing/retirement of their mouthpiece Larry Garrison over a bit of a financial mess.

I haven't had a whole lot to say about Mark NeJame and his representation because although I firmly believe that attorneys represent a lot of people simply because of the exposure or the money or a future book deal, in this case most of the folks involved I think do so because they want to help. That also includes Leonard Padilla, Larry Garrison, Jose Baez, Tim Miller and Mark NeJame. Some of them have probably made mistakes but I think that overall they just wanted to help. Maybe I am more of an optimist than I like to consider myself.

Anyhow, here is NeJames statement:

Nov. 8 Search Planned For Caylee, Kesse

Up To 4,000 Volunteer Searchers Expected

The latest search effort planned for Caylee Anthony is generating a lot of interest.

An Orlando private investigator who has volunteered to head up the effort to recruit team leaders said he has received over 400 calls since just 5 p.m. Wednesday.

"We're looking for someone with law enforcement background, fire service background, department of corrections -- public service background essentially," said James Copenhaver, private investigator. "Those folks have had some training in the past that they can bring to the table to help us

The search is being headed up by Equusearch, the same group based in Texas that searched for Caylee in September. The group's leader, Tim Miller, plans to return to Orlando on Nov. 7 to train team leaders.

On Nov. 8, the group hopes to send as many as 3,000 or 4,000 volunteer searchers out to look for both Caylee Anthony and Jennifer Kesse -- a Central Florida woman who has been missing since January 2006.

Equusearch is still looking for a search headquarters and determining the exact areas that will be searched. Both the sherriff's office and the FBI are on board with their efforts.

People who are interested in volunteering with Equusearch in the upcoming search for Caylee Anthony and Jennifer Kesse on Nov. 8 call Equusearch at 877-270-9500 or go to their website at www.texasequusearch.org. If you are retired law enforcement, military personnel, or have a background in fire or rescue and would like to serve as a team leader, please contact James Copenhaver at 407-897-1184.

Casey_Anthony.jpgUpdate 5:45pm - The Orange County Sheriff made a statement that although Casey Anthony has been indicted and arrested they still have not completed the primary objective in the case, and that is to find little Caylee Anthony.

Update 5:40pm - Also according to the Orlando Sentinel the Felony Squad knew where Casey Anthony was at all times and finally pulled her over and took her to the Sheriff's office.

Update 5:08pm - I've been told that Casey Anthony is now in custody at the Orange County Sheriff's department. They have also unsealed the indictment. The seven charges include First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Manslaughter, Aggravated Child Abuse and four counts of Providing False Information to a Law Enforcement Officer.

Update 4:31pm - According to the Orlando Sentinel Cindy and Casey Anthony left Jose Baez's office together for about an hour and now Cindy has shown up at home without Casey. They are reporting that she is believed to have switched cars somewhere on the way home. It's also been reported that she has until 5:30pm EST to turn herself in.

Everyone's favorite (not!) baby mama was indicted today for the murder of her two-year-old daughter Caylee Anthony. The Anthonys have been in the news since July when she finally reported her daughter missing after a month. Evidence that the police have painstakingly gathered over the last few months has led prosecutors to believe that little Caylee IS dead and they feel that they can successfully prosecute the mother for murder. The Orlando Sentinel has been reporting the developing story throughout the day.

The court has not officially named Casey Anthony as the defendant because she has not yet been taken into custody and of course I may be biting off more than I need to by naming her as the defendant prior to the unsealing of the indictment after the arrest is made. The courtroom opened up to the media at about 3:50 this afternoon and according to the Orlando Sentinel it was unclear at the time where Casey Anthony is at the present time, although according to WESH she is at her parent's house. The judge has also said that the defendant will be held with no bond. I'll update this post as the evening wears on.

The very last witness to be called before the Grand Jury earlier today was lead detective Yuri Melich, who was on crutches due to an earlier motorcycle accident not related to the investigation.

Jose Baez and his client Casey Anthony held a press conference earlier today and basically stated that if she were to be indicted she would turn herself in.

CNN as well as the Orlando Sentinel (linked above) has also been updating the story.

Caylee_Anthony.jpgUpdated 10/14/08 - Casey Anthony has been indicted by a grand jury on seven counts including 1st Degree Murder and is in police custody. More info here.

Updated October 10th 2:15pm - Jose Baez held a press conference earlier this afternoon along with Casey Anthony and announced that if the Grand Jury indicts her with homicide charges she will turn herself in to authorities. How nice of her.

Updated October 10th 2008 9:00am - This is an extremely long post so I have moved the older stuff to the extended entry. The latest update is here at the top, older stuff down below and there are 40+ posts concerning the Caylee Anthony case over the last few months that can be found in the Caylee Anthony archives if you are really bored and want to see what I have posted. I have not been updating this case lately, partly because it's the same old drama from her family with nothing new and partly because I've been on vacation for the last week. This is one of the first posts I wrote about the case back in July, which explains why I am using it for the update.

Anyhow, what's new with the case?

Well, the Grand Jury meets today and may be deciding whether or not to indict Casey Anthony on Murder charges or anything else more serious than the bullshit she's already charged with. The State Attorney, Lawson Lamar, will be questioning witnesses in front of the Grand Jury which is allowed to ask witnesses questions and can also call specific witnesses. The state can't force anyone to testify that doesn't want to and prosecutors also have to question any witnesses that can offer evidence that might clear Casey Anthony. It's expected that George Anthony, Casey's father, will be called to testify before the Grand Jury, as well as detectives in the case. Grand Juries are not open to the public, nor is the media allowed in the proceedings. When a Grand Jury is called they can also choose to deal with issues other than the one at hand although that rarely happens. Also, since there is no statute of limitations for Murder, the grand jury could indict Casey Anthony on murder charges and the State of Florida wait to pursue them whenever they are ready.

Apparently if Casey Anthony is indicted for murder Jose Baez may not be able to represent her, at least not without getting help from someone else. The Criminal Defense Attorney's Association says that he doesn't meet the standards for attorneys in capital cases. As lead counsel they have to have had five years experience as an attorney, have served as co-counsel in two death penalty cases and have demonstrated proficiency and commitment which exemplify quality representation in capital cases. That doesn't mean he couldn't be part of a legal team though.

So what's the deal with the dress that was announced on the Nancy Grace show? From what I understand, it was found by someone other than Texas EquuSearch, was too big for Caylee, police don't think that the dress is connected to the Anthony case and not only that, the origins of the dress seem somewhat dubious. Nancy's gotta keep her ratings up though so anything that's even semi-related to the case will be announced there including if someone sees Caylee's face in a cookie in Amsterdam.

In addition to the Grand Jury meeting today Casey Anthony was scheduled to be arraigned this morning on theft and fraud charges. Jose Baez entered a written plea of Not Guilty and a waiver of arraignment back in September so neither of them have to be present at the arraignment.

All the stuff below this is older updates to the original post...Should Casey be indicted this is where I will post the update as well.

Updated 10/14/08 - Casey Anthony has been indicted by a grand jury on seven counts including 1st Degree Murder and is in police custody. More info here

The Grand Jury in Orange County, Florida is scheduled to meet next Tuesday and according to several news reports I have read, prosecutors will be seeking homicide charges against Casey Anthony, mother of three-year-old Caylee Anthony. Prosecutors won't discuss whether or not this is the case.

It's only been a matter of time until they actually did this. With the evidence back from the FBI it's a really good chance that she will be convicted even without the body.

There's still the off chance that Caylee's body will be found though. Texas EquuSearch will be back in Florida on Friday to determine whether or not they can begin searching for Caylee. Tim Miller is also going to be discussing the Jennifer Kesse case with Orlando Police detectives. She has been missing since January of 2006 and has been a subject of wide discussion on the Internet.

I am going to be out of town for the weekend but will update this post as needed.

Updated 10/14/08 - Casey Anthony has been indicted by a grand jury on seven counts including 1st Degree Murder and is in police custody. More info here

All along Casey Anthony has been termed a person of interest, along with other members of her family, in the disappearance of Caylee Anthony. The Orange County Sheriff's department has now come out and officially said that Casey Anthony is a suspect in the investigation.

The change from the Sheriff's department has come about because of the evidence that they have received from the FBI which says that it is probably that Caylee Anthony's dead body was in her mother's trunk.

Also today Jose Baez entered a guilty plea in the check fraud charges against Casey Anthony which means she won't have to appear before a judge for arraignment on October 14th.

The Orange County Sheriff's department has released the recorded interviews between several people concerning the case against Casey Anthony. I don't yet have them but just as soon as I do I'll post them here. OK, here are the links for each interview.

Interview with Lee Anthony:

Interview with Tony Lazzaro:

Interview with Jesse Grund:

Jesse Grund's Second Interview:

The last one, Jesse Grund's second interview, is in WMA format so I don't think it's going to load. To listen to it and read about it at the Orlando Sentinel go over here.

I mentioned in a post yesterday that Lifetime had offered the Anthonys a $2 million movie deal. According to Lifetime that's just not true.

Lifetime Movie Network's Director of Corporate Communications, Gary Morganstein, said there was never a deal on the table.

"That report is not true. We are not developing a movie based on Caylee Anthony. I can't comment on an anonymous source that I know nothing about," Morganstein said. "All I can tell you is that it is not true."

Morganstein also added that the deal had never even been discussed with Channel 9.

A number of twist and turns have surfaced since Caylee Anthony has been missing. Talks of movie and book deals have been surfacing since media networks have kept the story in the news. But many who are involved in the case  claim they are not looking to cash in.

Obviously someone is lying through their teeth on this one but considering that we are talking about Casey Anthony and assorted family then lying certainly doesn't seem to be a stretch.

Updated 10/14/08 - Casey Anthony has been indicted by a grand jury on seven counts including 1st Degree Murder and is in police custody. More info here.

Zenaida Gonzalez is the woman that has been caught up in the search for Caylee Anthony. Casey Anthony most likely got her name off of the guest list of the Sawgrass apartments earlier this summer after Gonzalez looked at an apartment. Casey used the name with police as the non-existent babysitter whom she said kidnapped Caylee. Since then Gonzalez has been fired from her job and can't find another one as everyone thinks she is a suspect in the disappearance. Basically Anthony has ruined her life.

Zenaida Gonazalez has gotten herself a personal injury attorney and now is suing Casey Anthony for defamation.

...

In other news, WFTV in Orlando has finally uncovered evidence on who might be cashing in on the case. Someone close to the family has told Eyewitness News that the Anthonys have signed a $2 million movie deal with the Lifetime Movie Network.

According to Leonard Padilla Jose Baez, Casey Anthony's attorney, made him sign away any rights on movie and book deals and Baez is banking (literally) on being able to make a fortune representing the Anthonys in this.

...

There is also some talk, based upon text messages included in the released documentation, that Casey Anthony may have sold Caylee Anthony to someone in Puerto Rico. One of the only interviews that Cindy Anthony has done since Casey got out of jail was with Telemundo in Puerto Rico.

Leonard Padilla says it's bullshit, and more of Casey's lies; he says that Caylee Anthony is dead. I tend to agree with him.

I mentioned yesterday that the State Attorney's office had released several hundred more pages of the Anthony case in the discovery process after the Orlando Sentinel did a public records request. You can find it here.

It's a hefty bit of reading. There are a couple of interviews of note that you may want to read right away. They are:

I don't have anything else I want to write about it currently, so that's it for today in the Anthony case unless something freaky happens.
