Lindell Kay is a reporter with (I think) the Jacksonville Daily News, one of the local North Carolina papers and web sites. There is a blog called Off the Cuff with some really good stories and entries. I don't believe I haven't run across the site prior till today but now that I have I will be returning.

Anyhow, Capt. Rick Sutherland from the Onslow County Sheriff's Department has been answering some questions over there and you may be interested in reading them. Here are a couple of his answers from over there:

I will try to answer the questions in order. If I skip a question, I can't talk about it or I have already addressed it. I appreciate all of the questions and the interest in the case. I will do my best to visit this thread a couple of times a week. Also, if some of my answers seem short, they are not a reflection of the question or the person asking the question. They are a reflection of the amount of questions that I am trying to respond to.

Luminol is a chemical test that is very sensitive to the presence of blood. It is used to try to locate blood where visible blood is not present. The SBI performed the luminol testing in this case for us. They used these tests where necessary to discover evidence and to try to recreate some portions of the crime scene. After the processing of the house, I had a chance to speak to the CSI guys from our Office and we discussed some theories as to what occurred, where it occurred, and then what happened next. The luminol testing was used to prove/disprove those theories and to locate blood evidence not visible to the eye. Evidence developed after the processing of the house validated one of the theories proposed by the CSI guys. We feel confident that we know what happened. The SBI performed the tests we needed to help us to arrive at the facts. That is as specific as I will be.

The Sheriff said that there were nails/staples in the grave and that they appeared to be from a burned section of the fence. No idea whether more fence is missing or why.

We feel comfortable that we know who the shoe belongs to and that it will be available to prosecutors if they decide to use it at the trial. It appears to have evidentiary value.

The El Paso question. There are some answers in this case that could only come from Cesar or Maria. Maria, sadly, is no longer with us, and we don't know if Cesar will choose to answer some of the other questions that we have.

I am not sure at what point OCSD/NCIS had contact with Maria's biological parents. The homicide investigators would know if they had information material to the case and make contact with them at the appropriate time. I can not answer for NCIS.

We have reviewed the video with our forensic tools and do not think that there is more than one person.

KDB. I am sorry; I don't understand the context of the question about the table. Ask it again next round and expound a little.

There are a lot of people who believe with all of their hearts that Christina is guilty. I won't begin to try to change your minds. Our Office has access to all of the info in the homicide case and we don't believe that she had any part in the homicide. There is no cover up; there is no "deal" in exchange for her testimony. We have access to info on Cesar, Christina, and Maria for the time surrounding Maria's death and our homicide guys drew a warrant and testified before a Grand Jury that they had probable cause that Cesar killed Maria, and that is why we were seeking to apprehend him. There is no way that we could let people look at the case file before trial, but if we were able to fully disclose our info to the public it would change people's minds. But, our first duty is to proceed with the trial of Cesar and not to reveal all the info we have collected. If we received info tomorrow that implicated anyone in this case, we would discuss that info with the DA's Office and recommend charges based on the info.

The DA answered the question about the law regarding communicating with a fugitive.

We are very confident that Maria bought the ticket.

Some times given in this case are approximations. Like "he left around 4:00am". Other times are more concrete based on the supporting evidence.

We feel that we have identified Cesar from the ATM footage to the point that we could prove our case to a jury beyond reasonable doubt. I have not seen evidence of a second person.

If you are referring to Christina being a witness in the future (at trial) there is no way for me to speculate on that. If you are referring to the present, any witness, in any case, can provide information that is useful to an investigation even if they do not appear to be 100% "on board" with the investigation.

We believe that the Pathologists have explained and accounted for the condition of the bodies and we will rely on their examinations, opinions, and testimony as we move toward trial. There may be other "theories" that seem to be consistent, but the ME's opinions are the answers to our questions.

No exact time of death, just time parameters.

Some of the remarks at the Conference were to try to answer questions that have been asked of our Office and some were because of information that is set to be unsealed.

I can not begin to speak for Christina's emotions. I can only imagine that she has had to deal with enormous burdens in this situation and she is also suddenly a single parent.

The truck is still functional.

The SBI Lab will perform most of the forensic testing and make their experts available to testify at trial.

In any investigation, we would like to talk to the persons involved to get the story from them. In this case, we believe that we can prove our case beyond reasonable doubt. The evidence to support that belief will be introduced at trial.

The notes brought to our Office were handwritten.

The dog is fine, to the best of my knowledge. No idea on the gender or the name. (Can neither confirm nor deny the info posted in this thread on the dog and OCAS)

I choose not to repeat any info, but the Incident Report by my Office is public record and there is a link on this web site to some info released by the Marine Corps.

I can check with the homicide guys on the rh/lh question. There is no evidence to support that anyone killed Maria other than Cesar. That is why the Grand Jury found probable cause based on what we presented to them and indicted him.

Now, allow me to babble a moment. I can not begin to tell you what a great job the FBI, NCIS, the Marshals, and hundreds of state and local entities did in supporting us on this case. It is mind boggling to think of all of the leads that we have investigated in the last 90 days. We could have never reached the point we are at without support from these great law enforcement entities. The resources and intellect that are represented in these agencies and the way we were able to work together despite having different administrations and polices should make people proud of the LEO's that they have and that fact that our LEO's are the finest in the world. I am deeply saddened that I had to investigate the death of Maria, I am extremely proud to have worked with these excellent men and women across the country.

Police are investigating whether or not Cesar Laurean may have emailed North Carolina authorities to ask about turning himself in while he was on the run in Mexico.

The fact that he was using the Internet did help police narrow down the area that they needed to be looking for him in.

So Cesar Laurean has been captured. It's all over the Internet and the TV. The Maria Lauterbach case and the hunt for Cesar Laurean has been out of the news for a short while but that doesn't mean that the investigation hasn't been going on the whole time. CBS had this report yesterday morning.

What I find confusing is the fact that at least CNN had reported that they nabbed Cesar Laurean during a roadblock set up by the anti-kidnapping task force. Now it's being reported that they arrested Laurean walking down the main street in San Juan de la Vina in Tacambaro. The FBI is also reporting that their agents were present at his arrest but did not specify if they actually played a role in the arrest or not.

Here's a map of the approximate area where they caught him.

He made it a pretty good ways. It's not like he was just right over the border, but then he's had three months to make it there.

It's somewhat confusing getting the conflicting stories, but then again, the initial stories are often wrong particularly considering when it's another country entirely.

According to CNN Laurean spoke briefly with the AP while he was held by Mexican police.

Also according to CNN people that lived in the area wondered about Laurean and it seems that quite a few simply assumed that he was some sort of drug dealer and seemed quite OK with that. The locals that were interviewed said that Laurean didn't fight back when he was captured and that he went along peacefully.

He had told at least one of the locals that he had just come back from Spain and that he was being punished by his parents who were making him live on an avocado orchard.

Laurean has been living in a wood cabin in the mountains and walked into town on a daily basis so that he could use the local Internet cafe. No doubt to chat with his wife Christina and see if there was any news on his search.

Apparently he and Christina have been emailing through MySpace. From what I was reading earlier Cesar consistently asked for help from his family and Christina consistently denied it. The prosecutor for Onslow County, NC has said that communicating with him is not illegal just as long as she was not helping him. The local PD also say that she very specifically denied help to him and that they would not have captured him if it weren't for Christina Laurean's help. I still don't have the link to their MySpace pages, at least not current ones. This is one that I know of but it hasn't been logged in to since January. If anyone has run across them, send me an email or leave a comment.

The FBI is waiting for him to be extradited to the United States and have been encouraging him to waive extradition, letting him know that regardless of how he fights i, he will eventually be returned to the U.S. Right now he is being held at a Mexico City prison. Dewy Hudson, the district attorney in North Carolina where he will be tried has agreed not to seek the death penalty as Mexico refuses to send anyone back to the United States unless they are assured that they will not face execution. The Sheriff of Onslow County has also promised that Laurean will be treated as any other inmate once he is returned. He made the statement that the alleged killer 'is not an animal'.

The United States Navy is also going to perform a paternity test when he is returned to find out whether he was the father of the unborn child or not. They are waiting for his return since they want a reliable DNA sample from him. It is supposed to take at least 60 days to file the extradition paperwork with the Mexican government. I'm sure they could expedite the process but they will most likely want to cross all their t's and dot the i's before getting him back so as to not deny him any due process before bringing him home.

After the capture a sheriff called Mary Lauterbach, Maria's mother to tell her the news of his capture. Mary said "This has been a terrible tragedy, not only for our family but for Cesar and Christina as well as for their families.

In at least one of the posts I wrote I mentioned immigration as well as illegal aliens. Tammy Bruce made mention of it in a recent post about Cesar Laurean's capture, mentioning that's he's a 'scum Marine murderer'. She's got that part right but what she doesn't have right is that she correlates the fact that we need to get the wall built between Mexico and the U.S. to keep murderers fleeing to Mexico in order to avoid the death penalty, or at least that's inferred. I am all for kicking the illegals out but just as Arizona has taken the lead in enforcing it's existing laws and forcing the illegals out using plain old economics, perhaps the rest of the country needs to take a look at that and quit with the stupid fucking wall. What a waste of my tax money. All the wall is doing is keeping legal U.S. citizens inside and pissing off tax-paying landowners along the border. Why are we allowing our representatives to turn our country into a police state in the name of freedom. What a crock of shit.

Anyhow, back to the subject at hand. What exactly did Cesar mean by "proof" when questioned by reporters? That he thinks prosecutor's don't have enough or that there is proof he didn't do it?

Lauterbach and Laurean were both personnel clerks in the same logistics unit at Camp Lejeune, an expansive coastal North Carolina base that is home to roughly 50,000 Marines. Detectives believe Laurean killed Lauterbach, who was 20 and eight months pregnant, on Dec. 14 after forcing her to remove money from her bank account.

Detectives have said Laurean left behind a note for his wife in which he denied killing Lauterbach but admitted to burying her remains. In the note, Laurean said Lauterbach committed suicide by cutting her own throat.

Authorities rejected the assertion, saying evidence indicates Lauterbach died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Lauterbach accused Laurean of rape last spring, a charge he denied and one that Naval investigators were unable to corroborate. Even though Lauterbach later told investigators she did not feel Laurean posed a danger or threat to her, the pair was separated on base. The Marines have said their regimental commander was intent on taking the case to a hearing that could have led to a trial.

According to WRAL in North Carolina, Cesar Laurean may have contacted the Onslow County Sheriff via email on March 30th about the possibility of surrendering. The sheriff received an email that purported to be from Cesar Laurean, who wanted to open a dialogue with the sheriff and arrange for his surrender. According to the email the sender wanted to know if they could arrange for immunity from a military trial and that he was afraid to go to Fort Leavenworth or a military chain gang. They have not verified if the email was from Laurean or not. It did appear to be sent from Mexico but misspelled Laurean's last name.

After consulting with the district attorney Brown wrote that he could not ensure the sender immunity from military prosecution but that so far the military had let civilian authorities take the lead in the investigation.

America's Most Wanted seems to have finally updated their page on Laurean as well. Found the link by way of Websleuths. The forums are a pretty good place to follow crimes like this. Some of the theories seem to be pretty sound, while others may be a bit out there. One that seems to be fairly popular over there is that Christina Laurean masterminded the whole thing. I am kind of ambivalent on that one. It's entirely possible but I'm still not sure that was the case. The thing that makes it somewhat credible is the fact that he's still proclaiming his love for Maria and it may be that Christina actually killed her or at least made him do it. She certainly helped clean up after the fact.

One of the ladies over at Websleuths posted this:

"Xtina and Cesar together had waged a war of harrasment and abuse towards Maria for a long long time. Recruiting their friends, including lower level superiors of the Marine Corp. All culminating in a final "eff you Maria" celebration BBQ. Xtina was in on the harrasment and abuse from day one. But that involvement suddenly stops the day Maria is murdered? I'm just not buying it."

WTF? This is kind of out there. I haven't seen any references or links that confirm this, just someone else's opinion, although since 90% of the above is my opinion I guess it's no better than hers. What facts do you have to show that Christina and Cesar were waging a war of harassment? That she had been harassed by other marines and her car keyed? It happens at corporations where the buddy buddy system is in place too. I wouldn't exactly call that an escalating war though.

According to the prosecutor for Onslow County, North Carolina, he expects Cesar Laurean to waive extradition and be back in North Carolina soon. Later on in a news conference today though he said that depending on how Laurean deals with extradition it might take a couple of days or a couple of years.

Laurean has been taken to Mexico City where he is being questioned by Mexican federal authorities according to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.

When asked about whether Laurean was caught by accident, Brown (the prosecutor) said that "I know what's been going on behind the scenes...I'm confident in saying that the reason Cesar Laurean is in custody is by the professional pursuit that the agencies, all agencies involved, have carried on from the time he left here".

Using the information that the FBI gathered when they seized his sister-in-law's computer they were able to narrow down the area that needed to be searched.

I went to bed fairly early last night so I missed the news about the capture of Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean until just a few minutes ago. After having been on the run for three months, Mexican police have finally captured the fugitive according to the FBI.

When a Mexican reporter asked Laurean if he had killed Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach he replied that he loved her.

Cesar Laurean was arrested last night around 7 p.m. after he approached a roadblock set up by the local anti-kidnapping task force. When they asked him his name he gave his real one, which of course threw up a red flag once it was entered into a criminal database. The authorities are saying he was peaceful and surrendered with no resistance. He had apparently been sleeping in trees and surviving off their fruit. Laurean is thin and obviously has lost weight from being on the run.

According to Dewey Hudson, the district attorney for Onslow County North Carolina it might take up to two years to get him back if he chooses to fight extradition. Of course they are happy that he has been captured but Hudson said he was dissapointed that Laurean was captured in Mexico rather than America because now the death penalty has to be taken off the table.

Recently the FBI seized a computer belonging to Laurean's sister-in-law. Apparently Christina Laurean was using it to communicate with Laurean through emails. They also seized her diary. According to the FBI Christina Laurean was still very much in love with Cesar Laurean but was also angry with him.

As long as she was not not trying to help him, it was not illegal for her to be communicating with Laurean as his wife.

Authorities finally released the results of Maria Lauterbach's autopsy on Friday and the results are pretty much what they had reported before. The cut to her neck was superficial and may have occurred after death, which pretty much throws Corporal Cesar Laurean's story out the window, as if his flight to Mexico didn't already do that.

A gaping 4-inch wound was found on the left side of Lauterbach's neck, according to autopsy results released by the office of the chief medical examiner in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The wound is "incised," meaning it is a clean cut such as that made by a sharp instrument. However, the wound itself would not have been fatal, as there was only minimal damage to the underlying muscle, the results said.

"The autopsy confirms that there was a superficial incision to the neck that appears to have been made post-mortem," said a statement from Merle Wilberding and Chris Conard, attorneys representing Lauterbach's mother, Mary Lauterbach. "If so, that incision may have been made to have the body conform to Cesar Laurean's story that she had 'killed herself by slitting her throat.' "

The cut was made to try and conform to the story that he supposedly told his wife, about Maria coming to the house and killing herself.

I haven't heard much about Laurean in the mainstream news lately but that doesn't surprise me. He's still at large, most likely in Mexico. Perhaps Dog the Bounty Hunter will go in after him because we certainly haven't been able to get him.

Monday the Onslow County Sheriff's Department held a press briefing and said that the had received credible tips on the whereabouts of fugitive Cesar Lauren. They were basically just updating the local media as to where they are in the search for Laurean and wouldn't go into any kind of detail but are continuing to try and follow any leads that they get.

They also said that the Sheriff's Department had further questioned Laurean's wife this past Friday afternoon. The Sheriff's department declined to go into the topics discussed but did say that "Investigators spoke to Christina Laurean and she answered the quistions we had".

One of the commenters over at the Jacksonville Daily News brought up an interesting point that I had thought of and I am sure has run across the minds of investigators already. Perhaps Christina Laurean actually killed Marine Corporal Maria Lauterbach and Cesar jumped in to take the blame, being the scum-sucking cheater that he is. Perhaps he was trying to make up for fucking around on his wife and getting someone pregnant? The autopsy results show that she was killed with a crowbar and that he throat was cut after she was already dead. As a Marine I am sure that Christina is in decent shape and could certainly weild a crowbar.

Police are still insisting that Christina Laurean is cooperating with them and she has not been charged with any crime. As it stands now all they could really charge her with is obstruction of justice, not accessory to murder. They are probably currently getting more help and cooperation from her now than they would were she staying in the crossbar motel.

What is with these guys - Excess testosterone/steroids? Women in the Marines issues? "I'm pregnant, I'm keeping the baby and you're on the hook for 18 years issues"? These creeps probably never said hello to Maria (if that) and yet they feel they should write death threats and ignorant emails to someone who put up a WEB SITE for a dead woman and her baby. And why are they sticking up for POS Laurean or his supposedly innocent, unaware blind wife? Do they really not believe Laurean murdered a 8.5 mos pregnant Maria and her son Gabriel in cold blood and was such a dumbass Marine he buried her in his own backyard - literally feet from his back door in full view of his house where his child swung on her swingset and his dog played - and to cap off his depravity he threw a couple of PARTIES for his Marine buddies where they enjoyed some Marine bonding, beers, and a campfire circle around a bonfire over his victim's bodies!!!

They should be SICK and ANGRY all right, but at POS Laurean and his wife - not the person who out of the goodness of their heart put up a public online TRIBUTE to Maria and Gabriel. I hope the Marine Corp tracks down every last person who wrote something nasty and not only throws them in the brig, gives them latrine cleaning duty and confines them to base for 9 mos (maybe they will then "give birth" to an improved attitude) BUT also questions them in the "Marine Corp Way" for a few days as to their whereabouts, activities and bank withdrawals from Dec 11th to now.....

I am so disappointed...I really thought the Marine Corp was better than this. They have proven they are badly in need of a complete overhaul and change of policy and attitude from the Top Brass all the way to the fresh shaved grunts in boot camp. They certainly do NOT live up the their motto or their slogan in my eyes - and dare I say this whole sad story makes them look really hypocritical, bigoted and backward and decidedly NOT the branch of the armed forces the "best" young men and women would strive and sacrifice to achieve membership in. And it sure does nothing to assure the parents and spouses of potential Marines that they will be valued and kept as safe as possible by their commanders and their fellow Marines. I though they NEVER left a Marine behind - boy, they sure failed Maria (and Gabriel) and left a Marine behind - killed by a fellow Marine and abandoned to a cold lonely hole...and they didn't even bother to arrest their "stellar" Marine when they had the chance and instead let him run to Mexico from under their nose.

Urh, this whole case makes me furious and so very determined that Maria get justice AND that her death will be the driving force and inspiration for true CHANGE in the Marine Corp so that what happened to Maria and Gabriel NEVER happens again.

I don't agree with her 100% on this but she does bring up some interesting points. Any kind of organization, whether it be law enforcement, military or business "circles the wagons" to protect their own during time of crisis. Generally the truth will come out though and the offending party will be outed. It's part of human nature to protect your group, your family, your children. Why should we expect the behavior of the Marine Corps to be any different? If anything they should embody it even more so than others. I do however think that they need to release any and all information to law enforcement that they have on any of the involved parties and most likely have done so by now. The problem you run into is that neither law enforcement nor the military are going to give us all of the details of an open investigation, so it's easy for armchair detectives like us that really don't have a fucking clue to second guess them and claim that they are trying to protect a murderer.

DAILY NEWS STAFF The creator of an Internet memorial site for a pregnant Marine who authorities say was killed by a colleague in mid-December received online death threats from at least two Marines this week.

"Shut up or get cut up," a post made in the name of Ron Parikh appeared on the MySpace memorial for Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach on Feb. 5.

Marine Corps officials confirmed that Lance Cpl. Parikh, a personnel clerk currently assigned to a training command in California, was under investigation for several MySpace.com postings.

"Parikh is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division for information posted on the Internet about Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach," said Capt. Neal Fisher, public affairs director for Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twenty-nine Palms, Calif.

Another Marine, Lance Cpl. Jonathan Cole, is also under investigation for comments he made on the internet, Marine officials said.

Cole is assigned to a unit in the 2nd Marine Division which is based at Camp Lejeune, said Lt. Col. Curtis Hill, public affairs officer for II Marine Expeditionary Force.

"(Cole's) command is aware of the MySpace issue and is taking appropriate action," Hill said.

Communicating "certain language expressing a present determination or intent to wrongfully injure" someone is a violation of military law, according to the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

If such communications were "of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces" then Parikh, Cole and any other Marines involved could potentially face even more trouble, according to Article 134 of the UCMJ.

"If Marines were caught doing something inappropriate in uniform or their photograph was associated with something inappropriate online, that is a violation of the UMCJ," said Sgt. Paul Robbins, a public relations officer at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

A photograph of Parikh in dress blues serves as an icon picture on his MySpace account.

Jacksonville resident Miley Collier said she started the memorial page about a week ago as a way to remember Lauterbach and allow other people the opportunity to tell people what Lauterbach meant to them.

"I have received thousands of messages from people saying how Maria's story has touched their lives," Collier said. "I never expected to be threatened for setting up a memorial site."

Collier said she was petrified and worried given her geographic closeness to some of the Marines being investigated for their comments.

"You should be slapped in the face for talking about things that should be left alone. I'm not gonna sit here and watch you talk s--t," a post made from Parikh's MySpace account said. "I will do you like Laurean did if you don't take this page off."

Authorities say Lauterbach was killed by Cpl. Cesar Laurean Dec. 14. She was in the third trimester of a pregnancy at the time of her death and had accused Laurean of rape.

Laurean has been on the run since he fled Onslow County in mid-January. Authorities say Laurean left notes behind with his wife saying Lauterbach killed herself by slicing her own throat and he just buried her body behind the Half Moon home shared by the couple.

Posts attributed to Parikh's MySpace account claim Parikh knows Laurean and supports Laurean's purported version of events including that Lauterbach killed herself.

Lauterbach's autopsy revealed that she died of a blow to the head and cuts made to her neck were done post-mortem.

The section of the memorial site with the posts under investigation has been removed from the Web. Collier said she did not take the posts down but was informed by law-enforcement officials that portion of her site might be temporarily taken down during the investigation.

The fact that there are dumbasses everywhere shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone and there are always going to be people that will believe the other side of a story. That certainly shouldn't and doesn't reflect on an organization as a whole. It's the response of the organization that reflects on them and in the case of the two asshats posting on MySpace the Marine Corps is doing the right thing.

I was reading one report that talks about the $25,000 bounty on Laurean's head that has been in place since two days after his disappearance. It discussed the fact that $25k isn't enough for most bounty hunters to go after him, particularly if he's in Mexico. However, Duane Chapman, Dog the Bounty Hunter, who has already been in hot water for bringing one fugitive out of Mexico has reportedly been talking to Onslow County Officials. The grand jury indictments that I wrote about last week allege the Cesar Laurean forcibly stole money from Maria Lauterbach's bank account, killed her and then used her ATM card again.

Apparently Laurean's full name is Cesar Armando Laurean-Ramirez. I had not picked that up from any of my previous reading about it. Anyway, the Department of Justice is on the lookout...

 

Mexico has finally issued a warrant for Cesar Laurean, now a week after he was reported sighted. The warrant authorizes the Mexican police to follow leads and to arrest Laurean id found.

Interpol hasn't yet actually published the 'red notice' but once it does it will be accessible by 186 different member countries in four different languages.

In a move that should surprise no one, a grand jury indicted Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean for first-degree murder yesterday along with various other crimes such as ATM card theft, attempted card theft, fraud and robbery with a dangerous weapon. The initial findings from the second autopsy are showing that Maria Lauterbach's baby was not born before it died and under North Carolina law the killing of an unborn child is not illegal, so he won't be charged with two deaths. The military is still conducting tests though, to see if the baby's lungs contain oxygen. If any is found it would mean that the baby took a breath and would establish life.

North Carolina Authorities say that they are processing paperwork to ask Mexican officials help them find and detain missing Marine and murder suspect Cesar Laurean so that he can be extradited to the United States.

Updated 1-23-08 9:35 p.m. - I just saw over at CNN that the grand jury will be meeting on Thursday to consider what charges to file against Cesar Laurean for murdering Maria Lauterbach and burying her burned body in his back yard.

The 18 member grand jury is being called back for a special session tomorrow at 9 a.m. by Onslow County prosecutor Dewey Hudson. Other than murder, he wouldn't specify what other charges might be on the table.

There will be an 11 a.m. news conference following the special session to announce the grand jury's decision.

NCIS released a statement this afternoon saying that the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Deleware had conducted another autopsy and the information would be released by the Onslow County Sheriff's Office. Thus far they have not received it and the prosecutor is trying to get the results.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed now that Laurean traveled by bus to Mexico. He rode a bus form North Carolina to Houston, Texas where he caught another bus to San Luis Potosi Mexico, most likely arriving there on the Sunday after he fled.

Reports are out that the cousin of Cesar Laurean, the man sought in the brutal slaying of a pregnant marine in December, saw the man near Guadalajara Mexico a week ago. According to CNN, Juan Michael Ramirez had Laurean visit him in his liquor store in Zapopan and has told authorities that he did not know they were seeking him on murder charges. So much for the Mexican authorities cooperating.

Laurean told Ramirez that he was just passing through and was in the area with some buddies for a few days.

Since Laurean is in Mexico, Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson will be taking the death penalty off the table if Cesar Laurean is captured there.. As has been reported on TV and all over the Internet, Mexico is a very strong opponent of the death penalty and the chances of having Mexico extradite him would be pretty slim if he were looking at death.

The FBI plans to distribute matchbooks of business cards with Cesar Laurean's picture in Mexico. His wanted poster is now on the FBI's Most Wanted list with a $25,000 reward.

1-22-08 Breaking News. Cesar Laurean has been sighted in Mexico.

Some newly released video shows Cesar Laurean buying shovels, paint, concrete blocks and a wheelbarrow at a Lowes Home Improvement Store two days after Maria Lauterbach was murdered. I don't have a copy of it or a URL to post yet but most likely will on Saturday at some point. CNN got the video from America's Most Wanted and are supposed to broadcast it during tonight's Anderson Cooper 360.

The video shows Laurean shopping with a friend in the Lowes. Investigators say that they believe he was with someone at the store but won't comment as to whom.

Here is a bit of the video in a report from the AP which also focuses on the media blitz that's going on in the manhunt for Cesar Laurean.

What's interesting is that the neighbors say that they watched Christina painting the inside of the house recently. According to investigators there are reports that she helped do some of the interior painting last month. She still hasn't been charged in the case.

What's up with that?

The Onslow County Sheriff's Department says that she is a cooperating witness but obviously she was obstructing justice and was an accomplice in the deal.

I wasn't there so I just don't know. Was he threatening his wife Christina with bodily harm? If he was on base working they certainly weren't there together all of the time.

 

1-22-08 Breaking News. Cesar Laurean has been sighted in Mexico.

Update 1-18-08 3:24 p.m. Police are saying that they have received a credible tip that Cesar Laurean may be out west according to Onslow County Sheriff's Captain Rick Sutherlin. Since he is from the Las Vegas area, it's entirely possible that he tried to go back home looking for some place to hide.

Police have also revised her date of death, stating that they believe Maria Lauterbach was killed on the day she disappeared, December 14th rather than the 15th as they had originally thought.

Updated 1-17-08 8:30 p.m. In an affidavit Christina Laurean has said that she was at a Christmas party the late afternoon and evening that Maria Lauterbach was murdered and that her husband did not attend the party.

North Carolina Third District Representative Walter Jones has written a letter to Mexican President Felipe Calderon urging him to use any means necessary to help U.S. law enforcement bring Corporal Laurean to justice. The contents of the letter are as follows:

Updated January 17th 3:59pm - A police affidavit shows that Cesar Laurean and his wife Christina consulted an attorney on January 9th, the day before he fled. The lawyer told Laurean that he could be facing the death penalty. The very next day he took off and his wife appeared at the Onslow County Sheriff's Office with her attorney and a Sergeant from her former chain of command. At that time she gave police several notes she had found in the house from Cesar Laurean. According to prior reports I am wondering if perhaps he actually left earlier than his wife Christina has said. If he and his wife met with an attorney then that pretty much seals it that she knew of the murder and helped him plan his getaway. Did they set it up so that she turned over evidence in order to get out of charges? This at the very least makes her an accessory to the crime, even if after the fact, or perhaps she is just guilty of obstruction of justice.

Laurean has sent two letter to his wife since he fled, both postmarked from Houston, Texas.

Along with the affidavit there is a warrant to search Western Union records as well. Laurean and his wife Christina received a transfer of money between December 10th and January 12th. The affidavit doesn't give any further details about the money transfer.

Authorities also discovered last week the weapon used to kill Maria Lauterbach but won't disclose what that weapon is. According to ABC the Jacksonville Daily News has cited severeal sources that say it was a crowbar. It was handed over to police by a witness last week.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Christina Laurean did know about the death of Maria Lauterbach. Laurean told his wife that Lance Corporal Lauterbach visited their home on December 15th, told him that she planned to leave the area and demanded money. Laurean and Lauterbach bought a bus ticket for her to go to El Paso but he said that Lauterbach then returned to their hom and started to argue. That's when she supposedly produced a knife and slit her own throat. We know that to not be true since he bashed her freaking head in.

Updated 8:38 p.m. - According to CNN a woman that used to work with Corporal Cesar Laurean said that he is extremely innovative and described 'McGyver' type skills (referring to the television show) and training that would enable him to survive and adapt to life on the run. The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, left the Marine Corps in December and described Laurean as well-trained to adapt to his situation. She also called Laurean quiet but social, with many friends who spoke often of his 18-month-old daughter.

She also said that she had been friends with Lauterbach for about four years and that they were employeed in the Personnel Department at Camp LeJeune.

The friend said that Lauterbach confided in her and told her she had consensual sex with Laurean and that a verbal argument had occurred and that the rape happened in Laurean's office at Camp LeJeune.

The un-named woman also claims that Lauterbach told her that she was afraid of Laurean and HAD sought another protective order in September from her when the first one expired. She was also considering withdrawing the rape allegations because she felt that Marine Officials weren't taking her seriously.

The woman also says that there is no way that Lauterbach and Laurean had a continuing relationship after the rape, which disputes what Marine officials are saying.

Updated 7:20 p.m. - CNN has an update on their story:

Updated at 4:15 p.m. - According to WRAL out of North Carolina the FBI has said that they have tracked him as far as Texas and that regardless of my update below, he may actually have made it to Mexico. Authorities are not announcing how they tracked him to Texas or Mexico but agents have been dispatched to Mexico to try and find him. According to FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko "The FBI, working with our law enforcement partners suspect, but have not confirmed, that Cesar Laurean may have fled to Mexico. This is an ongoing matter and we will work with our law enforcement partners in Mexico to determine if he is there and if so, to locate and apprehend him"

Updated at 3:35 p.m. - The FBI now says that it is working with Mexican authorities to find and arrest Laurean if he is in Mexico. I just finished reading a couple of threads over at LeJeune Underground and I posted this over there: Although I have been posting the news on this, I honestly think that he's still in the U.S. He is most likely somewhere in the southeast, particularly considering that he left his truck in the area. Either that means that he did catch the Greyhound, leading to the possibility that the 'sighting' in Louisiana was real, caught a ride from a friend (plenty of guys were coming home from MOS graduation. My son caught a bus Friday at the same station where Maria Lauterbach purchased her ticket) or is still in the area. I personally think he's holed up in an empty apartment or barracks or has killed himself in remorse for the awful misdeeds he has done.

According to CNN the FBI now suspects that Cesar Laurean has fled to Mexico. Cesar is sought in connection with the murder of Maria Lauterbach, the eight-month-pregnant Marine enlisted who was missing back in December and finally found dead just last week. According to ABC News FBI agents and officials have leads indicating that he may have med it to Mexico.

Cesar Laurean is a naturalized U.S. Citizen who is a native of Guadalajara, Mexico. He lived in the Las Vegas area prior to joining the United States Marine Corps. Investigators are not ruling out the chance that he may still be in the United States but the FBI legal attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico has been notified. He became a U.S. citizen in 2003.

It's not currently known if Laurean kept his Mexican citizenship but he does apparently have family there.

His picture and an alert are currently posted on the FBI's web site and electronic billboards are being rolled out all over the country. The FBI feels that if they can get as many people out here with their eyes open they have a much better chance to catch Laurean.

1-22-08 Breaking News. Cesar Laurean has been sighted in Mexico.

Updated 1-16-2008 11:25 p.m. - I have been watching some of the videos over at CNN and according to them, Laurean's wife is not an ex-Marine, she is a current Marine and is still working on the base.

Also the Marine Corps is stating that they did indeed pass the information to Onslow County on December 19th, the day that she was reported missing.

Most of the news channels are now saying that the Marines dropped the ball, and should have been sharing information earlier. The thing is that they did stick with their normal policy. The girl was UA, as according to her note. As far as they knew she was AWOL and the guy involved in the rape case was still working and showing up for work when he should.

Here's the timeline as far as I know it:

December 14th: Lauterbach speaks with her mother, who later revealed that she had a firm conversation with her daughter and told her she should put the baby up for adoption since she would not be able to care for it. This is also the day that she leaves a note for her roommate basically stating she is going UA. This is also the day that she purchased a bus ticket to El Paso.

December 19th: Lauterbach's family reported her missing to Onslow County police. By this time she has most likely been dead for four days, since the 15th of December.

December 20th: Her cell phone was found on the side of the road near Camp LeJeune.

December 28th: Lauterbach (then dead for over a week) doesn't show up for a scheduled prenatal. She was due to give birth on February 14th.

January 7th: Lauterbach's car was found. Police say that it had been there since December 15th. That suprised me because as a manager for a restaurant, I would have had the damn thing towed after about three days, particularly during the busy Christmas season.

January 10th: Onslow County released documents suggesting that Lauterbach left willingly. Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown pleads for her to come home on national TV and the main stream media was still assuming she was a lying little girl. Their stance has changed from "this chick has snakes in her head" to "the marine corps had fucked up" in the manner of a week. Whatever gives good ratings, right? Assholes.

January 11th: Ed Brown announces that Lauterbach is dead and buried and names Corporal Cesar Armando Laurean as the main suspect and the guy that raped her, not a superior officer as the media had initially suggested.

Laurean booked from Camp LeJeune at 4 a.m., before he was announced as a suspect. He had four hours head start. His wife apprached the police with the note at 8 a.m. Later that day they search the Laurean property, finding the cavity where Lauterbach was buried.

January 12th: Police dig up the remains of Lauterbach and the baby. An arrest warrant for Cesar Laurean is issued.

January 15th: The autopsy results are released showing the Lauterbach died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Updated 1-15-08 11:30 p.m. - According to the reporters at CNN Maria Lauterbach told victim's advocates at Camp LeJeune that she didn't feel threatened of unsafe being around Cesar Armando Laurean.

Gary Sokoloski, the Judge Advocate General Officer for the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force said that Corporal Laurean never violated the military protective order keeping him away from Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach. I don't know if that is true or not, but since it expired four months ago the point is kind of moot, but the military needs to spin it so that they don't look like assholes either way.

Laurean continued to show up for several weeks after Lauterbach's disappearance and has denied having had any type of sexual contact with her. Considering that he bashed her head in and cut her throat I think it's pretty safe to say that he lied to military investigators on that account.

Police received a tip earlier this afternoon in Morrisville, North Carolina that led them to a hotel located there. Cesar Laurean's black Dodge pickup was found at the Microtel Inn which is located across the highway from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, on Airport Boulevard. Sherrie Joyner, the lady who works the front desk, said that Laurean never checked in.

On December 14th, which is the day that Maria Lauterbach disappeared, her roommate, Sgt. Durham, found a handwritten note that said,


So far the handwriting appears to match Lauterbach's. He noticed that her car and some of her personal items were gone. At that point he contacted her sister about the note and reported her absence to his superiors, believing that she had gone UA. The same day, an ATM camera caught her withdrawing $700 and she bought a one-way bus ticket to El Paso the next day. Perhaps she thought she was going to meet Laurean there?

According to Randi Kaye (Murdered Marine: You call this an investigation?) Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown announced earlier today that he won't be talking to the media anymore, at least until Cesar Laurean is caught. That is probably a good thing considering some of the statements I have heard.

Considering that according to the autopsy results that say she died before her family ever even reported her missing, most likely it wouldn't have helped them one iota.

I ran across this story at WRAL. Apparently Cesar Laurean was born in Mexico and is a naturalized American Citizen. Paul Ciccarelli, a special agent with NCIS is working with the Immigration Service, the U.S. Marshal's Service and the FBI to determine if Laurean is headed for Mexico.

The Autopsy on the charred remains found behind Cesar Laurean is complete and as expected they are the remains of Marine Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach, and she died from traumatic head injury due to blunt force trauma. Dr. Charles Garrett is the Onslow County medical examiner and made the announcement earlier today.

District Attorney Dewey Hudson announced the results of the autopsy but also said that some questions remain.

He did say that Lauterbach was eight months pregnant and that if her child had been born and then killed it would constitute another murder charge. I am not real sure what he means by that doublespeak. Either they aren't charging Laurean with the second murder or they are conjecturing that the baby was born. Heck if I know. According to Yahoo! News detectives aren't sure if she gave birth before her slaying or not. That pretty much puts the note about 'suicide' in the trash.

The FBI is ramping up their investigation and search for Cesar Armando Laurean and have pasted his face on electronic billboards all over the country.

A federal warrant was issued for his arrest last weekend and  there is a $25,000 reward being offered for information that leads to his capture.

The results of the autopsy show that Lauterbach was most likely killed on or around December 15th, four days before her family reported her missing to the police, which I am sure lets Sheriff Brown and his office breathe a great sigh of relief in that there was nothing they could have done to prevent her death.

Apparently the military protective order that I mentioned in an earlier post prevented Laurean from coming within 1000 feet of Lauterbach but the order expire back on September 24th.

9:04 p.m. - I just don't know about this Sheriff from North Carolina. At a news conference earlier today he now says that the search for Cesar Laurean is "Earthwide". I am partial to a bit of exaggeration myself but there is a time to exaggerate and there's a time not too. I would think that this is the latter.

The FBI is now offering a $25,000 reward to anyone that is able to provide information that leads to Laurean's capture.

Sheriff Brown also said that even though he has committed a horrible crime, Laurean still has friends and is most likely receiving help from them in his hiding. He asks that if Laurean makes contact to please turn in Cesar Laurean.

7:47 p.m. - Apparently over the weekend investigators found Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach's ATM card at a Durham, North Carolina bus station and the pickup truck that belongs to Cesar Laurean was reported seen in the area. Police received several tips from people who reported seeing the truck.

Updated January 14th at 4:59 a.m. - after the supposed confirmed sighting that Sheriff Ed Brown in North Carolina announced on Sunday the 13th, now there is some doubt as to whether that is true or not.

Chief Deputy Charlie Caldwell of the Shreveport Marshal's Office has told KSLA-TV that he doesn't know of any evidence that Cesar Laurean was/is in Louisiana. According to Caldwell they have not had any confirmed sightings of Laurean.

Yesterday Sheriff Brown's office reported that it had received numerous pieces of information that made them believe that were less than two hours behind Laurean. Later in the day the Sheriff changed that to not putting a timeline on it.

Laurean is from Nevada and is still believed to be driving a black Dodge pickup with North Carolina plates TRR-1522. They describe him as dangerous is cornered.

One thing that I find interesting is the fact that Naval investigators said that they didn't consider Laurean a flight risk since it seemed that Laurean and pregnant marine Maria Lauterbach had carried on some sort of friendly relationship after she had filed the complaint against him and cited possible proof in the matter, yet Lauterbach's family is 100% disagreeing and claims that Lauterbach had no relationship with him whatsoever, that she was being continually harassed by the Marines and nothing was being done. From my reading last night I learned that the Marine Corps had separated the two and also imposed a military protective order to keep Laurean away from her.

Not to bad-mouth the dead that can't defend themselves but that does kind of bring us back to the statement her mother made prior to finding Lauterbach's remains that she was a liar. For sure someone is lying here. Either Lauterbach lied to her parents about the Marines doing nothing or the Marines are lying and covering it up.

Is there the possibility that Laurean is telling the truth and that Lauterbach did cut her own throat in his house? The blood on his ceiling and walls certainly doesn't mean that she didn't. Is it possible that they can tell from the blood splatters where she was at the time? If you want to go even farther here, I guess it's possible that she cut her own throat knowing that he would be implicated in the murder and he burned her body for the same reason.

It seems like this case is getting weirder and weirder all the time and before all is said and done I am sure to be surprised again.

Onslow County Sheriff confirmed reported sightings of Corporal Cesar Laurean at a Greyhound bus station in Shreveport Louisiana today.

He also reported that Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean was seen either on a bus or getting off a bus that was heading to Texas but warned that it doesn't mean he was going in the same direction. He was alone when he was seen by a witness Saturday night.

Sheriff Brown is confident that Laurean will be apprehended shortly and when questioned as to why he wasn't arrested Saturday night Brown said that he was not sighted by law enforcement and that the general public needs to not try and detain him.

Shreveport police are cooperating with the United States Marshal's Service and other law enforcement agencies to try and find Laurean. Federal officials have issued a fugitive warrant for his arrest.

The warrant charges Laurean with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution according to the FBI.

The Washington Post is apparently questioning the urgency of the search by law enforcement officials.

 

 

I think that urgency may have been an issue when the investigation had to do with rape but this case has turned extremely ugly in the last few days and I don't believe urgency is at issue here.
