Shadowscope: Product Reviews Archives

One of the things that I got into once I started using an HTPC is to make sure that I kept an up to date movie database of both my online and offline movies. I have so many DVDs stored as well as recordings that sometimes it's hard to remember what I have, which version and so on. All My Movies makes this process easier by allowing me to keep a running tally of my movie collection with information pertaining to the movie, the actors and the supporting cast as well as directors and producers.

It also works with TV series, which is a big deal to me since I have quite a few entire series recorded in BeyondTV. Another reason I like All My Movies is the fact that the application is skinnable so any of the Windowblinds skins I use work with it as well.

I have used several different movie database programs to see what worked well and I like the fact that I can import and export my database to try with other stuff. It helps to be able to export it and use with Meedio or BeyondMedia since that's where I do most of my movie watching.

If you are interested in checking out All My Movies check out one of the links above and go download the trial version. It's a pretty small download and the trial lasts for 30 days, which should give you an idea about whether you want it or not.

Oh yeah, it's also compatible with the cheap cue cat barcode scanners. I picked one of these up from Radio Shack a few years ago and scanning UPC codes from DVDs is about the only thing I have ever been able to use it for.

...but do you have any Grey Poupon?

I used to love those old commercials. I still laugh when I see them.

One of the coolest types of reviews I enjoy doing are when someone actually sends me a product to try so that I can right a review. Most of the time they really want an honest review in return for me using their product, which I think is just cool. It's not just me taking money to link to a website and right some junk about it.

Grey Poupon 004 I received these two bottles of Grey Poupon Mustard over the weekend and I was asked to try them and post an honest review about them. Heck, that's easy. The wife made hamburgers for supper Sunday night and what's a hamburger without mustard?

I like mustard anyway and although plain old yellow mustard will do in a pinch I prefer brown mustard. Lately I have been on a honey mustard kick but it's time to broaden my horizons. Believe it or not I have never had Grey Poupon in my life, so this is a perfect time to try it out. I received the two bottles in the picture. One is Harvest Coarse Ground that's made with whole mustard seeds. It's pretty decent and the one I ended up using. It has a nice strong mustard taste that tingles on the tongue and the texture is nice. Like I said, I like mustard, so I spread enough on there to really taste it. This would be good with a corned beef brisket. Every once in a while the wife will cook one up for us and I am looking forward to the next time.

The other one I got was the Hearty Spicy Brown. It also has a strong taste but it is much...deeper? I think this would go well with something like bratwurst or some other type of sausage. It is good, but I think I like the one with whole mustard seeds better. It is slightly milder and has a lighter taste for lack of a better word.

As far as mustards go, these are pretty darned good and I can see myself getting them again in the future.

This talk about food has gotten me hungry. I think it's time for a sandwich...

A few days ago I received in the mail a packages of Pepper Spray to review.

Here is the package itself. I had signed up to get one but never heard back so I figured they decided to send it to someone else. When I received it I was pretty happy because although I will end up letting the wife have it, it's nice being able to have more self defense products around. You can never have too many. About the only thing that would have been better is if they sent me a shotgun...

With the one that I received from Self Defense Supply, it is Mace brand and relies on a pretty powerful pepper formula that on direct contact  according to the packaging 'forces an assailant's eyes to slam shut while causing uncontrollable choking'. It's not lying. If you have never seen anyone get sprayed or had it happen (I have) it's a sight to behold. I tried to find someone to be a willing test subject so that I could properly review it but alas, I had no luck. Guess I need to take it to the next blogmeet...

As I said above, I will end up giving it to the wife. Even if she were willing to, the law doesn't allow her to take a gun to school, and with some of the morons in our public school are just out of control. I worry more about my wife teaching than I would if she were a police officer. She would probably be safer in law enforcement than she is as a teacher. She can carry it in her purse just in case...

The packaging itself is just what I expect from modern packaging, designed so that you can't get into it :)

Actually it's not as bad as some packages I have had to open. I was able to fairly easily cut into the plastic in the back. I have seen some that just about took a saw to get open, and this one, while I couldn't get it open with my bare hands, was pretty easy to get open with a small knife.

The product itself is just the right size to fit into your hand and is guaranteed.

  • Each unit fires about 10 one second bursts.
  • Includes a built-in belt clip and key chain.
  • Has an effective range of up to 10 feet (if you are any farther you can usually run)
  • Includes easy to follow directions
  • Each unit is test-fired prior to shipping (does this mean that it only includes 9 one second bursts or did it start with 11?)
  • Includes a 30 day money back guarantee.

I checked out the web site and they have some pretty cool self defense products for sale and the price is very reasonable as well. They also sell alternatives to pepper spray that you can buy just in case you live in New York, Wisconsin or Michigan since Pepper Spray is not legal in any of those states.
