Photohunt Saturday: What is That?

I took this photo at work a couple of weeks ago and had meant to post it (along with a short story) then but decided that it would be better served in this week's PhotoHunt, "What Is That?"

Like I said I shot this out behind one of my restaurants while I was doing some cleaning earlier in the week.

Any idea what it is? Guess in the comments and if you really want to know, it's in the extended entry and down the page under the links.

I was cleaning the back porch in one of my restaurants a couple of weeks ago when I noticed what this was in hanging on the wall above the door. It took a few minutes of spraying with the hose to remove the entire Dirt Dauber's nest off of the wall and several of these came out. It's the larva of a Dirt Daubber. Nasty creatures those.

Originally I was thinking about taking the eldest daughter to Six Flags today but the wife has to leave fairly early to go see the Braves play tonight. Maybe we will go on my day off next week.

I think that she and I are going to see the new Batman movie today. I'll have to post a review of it once I get home. Love's me some Batman...

Check Out These Fish...

I've got a couple of fish ponds in my backyard. I love having fish. I don't currently have any tanks inside the house but have been thinking about it. Rather than goldfish or any other freshwater fish I've been thinking about some of the saltwater fish like they sell at Reef Hot Spot. There really isn't anyplace around here to buy decent pets or supplies (don't forget I am in a pretty rural area) so I would get them online anyway.

Reef Hot Spot is a pretty cool Saltwater Fish Store. They sell supplies, aquariums, aquarium saltwater fish and some other pretty cool items needed to set up a decent saltwater environment.

Hey look, it's Nemo!

When we went to Epcot back at the beginning of June we made sure to go to the Nemo and Friends exhibit. The girls had a blast. They have a huge saltwater aquarium with Dolphins and Sharks as well as all kinds of other fish, including the Ocellaris like that one.

Since I would want to have a pretty cool environment for the fish I would most likely get some rocks and plants that belong as well as Live coral. They have a pretty cool selection of live coral too!

The pictures are OK but you really have to go over to the web site to see what they have.

They are based out of Los Angeles and have a store there as well as the one online so if you are near LA you can just go to the store. They offer gift certificates too if you need a gift for someone else that might love saltwater fish.

The Cookout...

We had a pretty good time cooking out last night. I enjoy cooking out for folks and could do it every week. There was a ton of food as usual and most of it was pretty darned good. Cooking after two or three beers made the burgers a bit more well done that I usually prefer but the brauts and ribs were great, as was the company.

Denny and Zonker (he of the defunct blog) stopped in as did some of my neighbors and a couple of our co-workers. Since it was on a work night not quite as many folks dropped in and several of our friends are on vacation as well.

It wasn't too terribly late when we finished up considering how late we have talked into the night on other occasions. Great conversation and Denny broke out the guitar for a while.

It's always an interesting mix when bloggers and "normal" people get together at one of our cookouts and this was no exception...

Wednesday Hero: Specialist Kisha Makerney

23 years old from Fort Towson, Oklahoma
120th Engineers, Oklahoma Army National Guard

Spc. Kisha Makerney isn't being profiled today because of something she did on the battlefield. She's being profiled because her spirit and determination. In 2002, Makerney joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard out of a sense of patriotism, because, as she put it, "I love our country and our people." Between 2004 and 2005, she served in Iraq as a gunner and helped provide battalion security. She returned home in early 2005 and was in a terrible motorcycle accident on June 25, 2005. The front wheel of her brand new bike had blown out and sent her flying into a highway sign. She looked up at her now mangled bike and was angry. That's when she noticed that her left leg below the knee was missing. The first thing she thought of when she saw her leg was that her military career was over.

Makerney pulled herself out of the ditch that she had landed in and was able to flag down a passing motorist. She was taken a hospital in Hugo, Oklahoma before being flown to Dallas, Texas.

As soon as word spread about her accident, her fellow soldiers, her second family, rallied and rushed to her bedside. "Even before I was out of surgery they were waiting in the halls," she said.

The wife posted an entry over at her site. Apparently the phone number she posted for the Chalet Kristy was incorrect. The correct number is 706-878-2155. Also, oh by the way, there is something else big going on that weekend (aside from the fact that it's Oktoberfest in Helen) so if you are planning on reserving a room for the Southeastern Writer's Conference you need to get it done now!

I have a site set up as well over here. I will post pictures over there and there is directions to the hotel as well as pricing.

What is your Bills IQ?

This is a pretty cool site. I stopped by to check it out after someone sent me an email telling me about it so I figured I would share it. You can go over to Bills IQ and see if you are "financially fit" or not. Yeah, I know it's not quite that easy and there are a lot of different ways to look at how your finances are doing. I scored a B+ on their quiz myself. I am saving more than 10% of my wages for retirement, saving for my kid's college, know my credit score and generally try to pay off my highest interest debt first. The reason it's a B+ instead of an "A"? That's because like quite a few Americans I carry more than my share of debt and credit cards. I know it's not a good thing and my balances are higher than I would like them to be as well. The biggest thing that worries me of course is the fact that I don't have a big enough backup fund available should there be an emergency.

I will have most of the credit cards paid off this year and then start trying to save a bit extra. I could have already done it but we chose to spend a bit extra on vacations this year instead. Yeah, bad decisions but it's one of those things. Work hard, play hard.

If you don't know what your budgets are or what your credit score is, get your tail on over to Bills IQ and get some information. If you are familiar with your finances and know where your retirement is going then you still might want to check it out and see what your score is.

Susan Atkins to Die Behind Bars...

If you don't know who Susan Atkins is, she was known as Sadie Mae Glutz to the rest of the Manson family. She was convicted of participating in the murders of five people in 1969, including Sharon Tate whom she stabbed 16 times and then scrawled the word pig over the door at the house that Tate shared with Roman Polanski.

In 1993 Susan Atkins told the parole board that Tate pleaded for her unborn child's life as Atkins held her down and stabbed her.

Atkins has brain cancer and the California Board of Parole Hearings has been denied a compassionate release from prison.

Good damn deal. I hope she rots in prison. The only thing that would have been better would be if they had fried her sorry ass.
